B-52 in the Moon’s desert

ボンバー! The lost B-52 bomber is located in Mojave Desert, California. With a specific goal in mind, I started walking up the desert after sunset. I’ve heard a lot of stories of deserts at night so I was prepared to face the pitch black darkness and the freezing wind, but what I got was completely opposite. It wasn’t cold! No wind at all! The moon was shining brightly and lit the desert sand that night! It was a perfect day for a trip to see the abandoned aircrafts.

失われたB-52爆撃機は、カルフォルニア州、モハーヴェ砂漠に存在します。今回は、夜の砂漠を歩き、爆撃機を見る！という目標を高らかに、日も暮れたモハーヴェ砂漠に突撃してきました。夜の砂漠は、風も強く、寒くなるのがお約束と情報を得ていましたが、行った日は快晴！寒くない！そして風もない！さらには月が出る！といったとても運が良い日でした。まさに、戦闘機日和！

It WAS pitch dark when I started walking but then I noticed the full moon appeared in the sky all the sudden and lit the sand so bright. It’s so hard to put its beauty into words, but eerie beauty might best describe the scene.

砂漠を歩き始めたときは、真っ暗。しかし、目が慣れてくるのと「歩ける！歩けるぞ！」。そして、同時にまんまるの月が登場。砂漠の砂が月に照らされ地面が白く輝きだします。月夜の砂漠の雰囲気は言葉にするのがとても難しい不思議な感覚。「不気味美しい」という言葉がぴったりかもしれません。

Walking in the otherworldly desert for 40 minutes, I spotted the B-52 in the distance! I yelled “Ohisasiburi!” (It’s been so long!) while running up to the aircraft, but seeing it at night was different from when I first saw it in the mid-day so I faltered a little. I just can’t get tired of that sense of empty feeling you get while out in the desert. Love emptiness. Yay emptiness. This place is so special to me. I can certainly go for another round or two.

幻想的な砂漠を歩くこと40分。見えてきました！Ｂ-52爆撃機。「お久しぶりー！」と叫びながら機体に近づきますが、昼間とは違う不気味で圧倒的な存在感に一瞬たじろぎます。砂漠という何もない環境が生み出す虚無感は、何度来ても飽きません。虚無最高。写真を撮影中に、機体がたまにバキっと鳴るときがあり、ビクつくこと数回。その雰囲気含め、本当にこの爆撃機は特別な場所。あと2回は行っても飽きない場所。
