The Blue Horizon Boxing Ring, voted as a number one venue in the world at one time, was shut down in June of 2010 after several tax problems. Ever since the closure, the building is surprisingly in good condition without any structural deterioration even though no one seems to be maintaining it. Someone is living in there though. (Not sure if that person’s a manager or not)
2010年6月に税務上の問題で閉鎖されたボクシングリングの廃墟、ブルーホライゾン。世界で第1位のボクシング会場選ばれ過去があるボクシング会場だった。その昔、フィラデルフィアではボクシングブームが起こった。ボクシング会場やジムがたくさん存在し、毎晩のように試合が行われ人々は熱狂した。
Adrian,I did it!
At one time in history, Philadelphia was full of boxing venues and gyms. Reason for that trend? Yes, this is where the multiple award-winning movie, Rocky was filmed. Unfortunately, many of those gyms were closed and torn down, and the venue I’m about to introduce is one of those many closed meccas.
ロッキー気分
美しいブルーのボクシングリングを見たとき、ロッキーの劇中にも登場しそうな雰囲気があった。そう、フィラデルフィアは伝説的な映画ロッキーの舞台になった場所。かつて1000人以上の客が入り、白熱した数々の試合が行われていた場所。声援が今でも聞こえてくるような気がする。
The mysterious manager
The manager appeared when I knocked on the door of the building. After paying $25 to a hand reaching out, I was allowed to come in. He continued to walk without saying a single word, leading the way to the boxing venue. The route he was taking was weird and confusing. Why are you hiding it!? Why’s there even a trap!? Maybe there’s something there that must be hidden…
After reaching the venue, the manager turned on the lights and gave me 30 minutes to look around. The blue ring with Blue Horizon written on it appears out of darkness. I can almost hear all the cheering from 1500 supporters that watched through numerous games back then.
噂の支配人の導き
「この廃墟には支配人がいるから」と聞いていたので、建物のドアをノックすると「噂の支配人」が登場。差し出された手に25ドルを支払う。入ってよしの合図。無言のまま暗い廊下をずんずんと進む支配人。ルートの説明は割愛させてもらいますが、ざっくり雰囲気だけ説明すると「なぜそんなとこに隠し通路が？」「この謎のトラップはなんだ？」とかなり複雑なルートを経由する。とにかく、この支配人がいないとリングにはたどり着けない仕様になっている模様。
制限時間は30分だ！
会場につくと、「30分だけだ」と支配人。言うやいなやボクシングリングに照明がオンされた。青いリングが暗い会場内にぽっと現れ頭の中で鐘の音がなる。と歓喜の声をあげてしまう。支配人の許可をもらいリングにあがらせてもらう。選手でもないのに神聖なリングに上がるのは気がひけたが貴重な体験。なんだか戦えそうな気がしてきたので、エアー猫パンチをくりだす、「そんなパンチじゃあ、アメリカ人と戦えないぞ」とヤジのような声援がとんできた。
