Pontiac Silverdome, a massive covered stadium, is located in Pontiac, Michigan. It makes you feel like you are experiencing the end of the world while glancing up at the fabric ceiling now completely destroyed, which would have been supported by air pressure back then. I heard a rumor around April of 2017 that this building was planned to be demolished. At first, I thought it was going to be another one of those “we are going to be taking it down… someday, sometime, in the near future” type of a rumor (since I’ve been hearing the same thing since 2013…), but this time they were serious. Let’s take a look at the final moment of the Silverdome. Thank you Agent O. for allowing me show this drone movie of yours.
ポンティアック・シルバードームは、アメリカのミシガン州ポンティアックにあるドーム型の巨大なスタジアムの廃墟。ドーム内部から空気圧で押し上げる布屋根がはがれ落ちた光景はこの世の終わりを彷彿させる光景です。シルバードームの取り壊し計画は2013年ごろから噂され、2017年４月くらいから本格始動。「どうせ、工事するする詐欺だろ」と思っていたのですが…今回はどうやら本気だったようです。エージェント.O の撮影協力のもと、シルバードーム最後の姿を撮影してきました。
A Little History
This was the home of the NFL Detroit Lions from the opening day to 2001, and also to the NBA Detroit Pistons from 1978 to 1988. The Pontiac Silverdome hosted numerous major events and games like the World Cup up until 2001 when a new stadium was built. The property went up for an auction in 2012, but no one was taking care of it after it was bid. The demolition started around August 2017.
NFLデトロイト・ライオンズが開場から2001年まで、NBAデトロイト・ピストンズが1978年から1988年まで本拠地にしていた。ワールドカップなど数多くの大イベント開催実績がある。新スタジアム建設が予定され、2001年シルバードームは役目を終える。2012年に売りに出されて以降買い手がつかず、メンテナンスもされていない為廃墟と化している。2017年夏より取り壊し開始された。
Let’s start flying drones!
On October 2017 in the afternoon with a cloudy sky. The filming starts with an exciting voice yelling out “Massive!” The surrounding residential area seemed like an average, peaceful neighborhood, unlike some of the rumors you hear. “Yo-Yo” couldn’t be spotted either. (FYI, Yo-Yo’s are Pokémon like creatures who would come charging at people while howling “Yo-Yo”) The area is completely closed off and surrounded by fences, and patrol cars are searching the area. It seemed like it would be challenging to go in during the day. The parking lot was supposedly used as a space for various events (there’s a course for drag race too), but it’s only been used as a storage space for some company’s automobiles.
2017年10月。夕方。曇り空。シルバードーム周辺エリアは、治安が悪いと聞いていましたが、いわゆるアメリカの平均的な住宅街で特に治安の悪そうなイメージはなかった。Yo-Yo-さんの姿もなかった。（※Yo-Yoとは、Yo-Yoいいながら話しかけてくる人のこと）。ドーム周囲は完全にフェンスで覆われ閉鎖され、パトロールカーが周回している姿もあり、昼間中に入るのは、なかなか難しそう。駐車場敷地はイベント等に使える(ドラッグレースのコースがある)という話を聞いた事があったけれど、今は駐車場の半分以上が某車メーカーの完成車(？)のストレージになっていました。
While filming
If you look on a Google map, you could see that demolition process is underway. Much of the Pontiac Silverdome is now gone; its surrounding embanked, multiple heavy machineries are in place, majority of the ground level seats have been taken down. If they continue at this rate, you won’t see much left pretty soon. I wonder who will be using this massive lot and for what during this retail apocalypse.
Googleマップの衛星写真で見る写真と比べると、かなり解体が進んでいるのが分かる。シルバードームの周囲には、内部取り壊しの際に出た瓦礫の盛り土がされていた。内外に重機がいくつも見え、一階客席部分のほとんどが壊され砂地になっていました。解体がこのまま進むとしたら、更地になるまでそう時間は掛からない様子。小売業の不振が続くアメリカで、この巨大な敷地を一体何に使うのかが最大の疑問ですね。
