The Specola museum, in Firenze, Italy, which was built at the end of 18th century, is also famous because of its goods: many wax effigies of dissection of human bodies, moulages. The museum is located on the third floor of an old building built at the back street. They also own many specimens of insects and zoological specimens.
I had been eager to visit this place since I read the collection of photographs of this museum in my school days, however until this time I did’t visit here even I came to Italy some times. At last, finally, eventually, at length, I AM HERE!!!!
This article contains grotesque pictures because I’d like to show mainly wax effigies and these kinds of stuff, please close your browser if you’re not good at them.
The Beautiful Arms and Legs
These are not real bodies. All are wax effigies made by craftmans. At that time, these faked bodies were handled as valuable materials of anatomy, but now these are considered as great arts. The most famous one is “A Wax Effigy of A Marvelous Woman with Completely Visible Organs”.
The Minutely Reproduced Human Part
All effigies have perfect reproduced body: each blood vessels, sections of flesh, representation of fats, and even hair. The perfection grab the visitors’ hearts, and let them watch these beautiful bodies. If these are real bodies, maybe visitors can’t look in their face, however the effigies are, because of its grotesque beauty and fascination, completely attractive.
One Thing, A Fault, I Think
If you are interested in this museum because of ‘Encyclopaedia Anatomica of the Specola museum book (TASCHEN)’, I could say you will be a little bit disappointed when you visit here. In actual fact, these bodies are disappointed under normal fluorescent lights, therefore you can’t feel the strange atmosphere.
