I got a chance to try the Russian cuisine!!! An Ukrainian and Russian couple took me to the restaurant “Mari Vanna” located on the street near the Smithsonian. I was really looking forward to have it because I really love Russian foods, and happily, I exulted at the great taste of those foods.
The country used to be the USSR strongly grabs my heart. This does not mean I like the Communists bloc or I am a communist. Of course I know some people say it was a dark black period; even so, I’m surely believing the cultures and designs were created in the era still have a drastic impression to the world. These things have a subtle charm to attract people. Also the Russian foods have!!! How incredible what the USSR system produced!!!!
Child Beer? The couple recommended a famous drink like a child’s beer in Russia because I can’t drink alcohol. It tastes like…non-alcohol beer with coke? Tastes really nice!!!
Pumpkin soup (Тыквенный суп)This pumpkin soup is served by a dish made of bread. This is very popular in that province. The rich taste of pumpkins gives me a really happy meal time!
Cheburek (Чебурек).It’s like a large fried pirozhki. Actually this one is not a Russian, but a Turkish dish. Inside its fried body, stew of the ground meat is waiting for you. Once you cut the body, wonderful meat juice will come out!!! Choose your favorite dip, and open your mouth to invite it. U! MA! I! Delicious!!!!!!!!!!!! Juicy meat will fill your mind with an great aroma!!!
Pancakes (Блины) with salmonThis dish is called “called оладьи (flat pancakes of salmon)”. As Japanese, it looks like a crape for me, but this is a pancake, pancake, ok? The harmony of salmon and thin but soft pancakes will surely makes you happy, I promise.
Beef Stroganoff with buckwheat and pickles(Бефстроганов с гречкой и солеными огурцами)
This popular food “Beef Stroganoff” is a little bit different from what I’ve tried in Japan. It is served with grains made from buckwheat. This one is SUPER tasty!!! Your stomach will be shot by combination of stroganoff and buckwheat.
Pelmeni (Пельмени).Yeah!! Pelmeni!!! Pelmeni!!! USSR!!! RUSSIA!!!! I can’t believe the time has come I can have the real pelmeni. It’s a dumpling with various stuffing: meat, potato, cabbage, mushrooms. This food with cottage cheese or cherries is also called Vareniki, but at this time I tried pelmeni version. Oh…heaven, yeah, the heaven of deliciousness…Why cannot I eat this in Japan? Why Japanese people!!!!!!!!!!??? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????
MAJI-VodkaUnfortunately I forgot to take photos; of course vodka was served with pickled vegetables. My friend (a Macho from Soviet System) told “This vodka tastes really pure so I can drink this as a glass of water. Drinking this with eating pickles drives me vodka crazy”. I see. TSUKEMONO tasty.
Cottage Cheese Pancakes (Сырники)This cheesecake, a soufflé, tastes sour and mild sweet. My favorite taste!! One of the best deserts!!!
Soviet era confectionsI received this confections which was made in Soviet era when I leave the restaurant. I did not know each details, but everything was delicious!!! “Little Cow” or may be “Cowy” (Коровка) and “Camomill” (Ромашка). The black one is “Ukrainian Night” (Українська ніч).
If I had an iron stomach, I would try more and more foods; however, there was a limit. The foods were marvelous, and the restaurant was so cute! Thanks Mari Vanna, thanks matryoshka, thanks tundra climate…thanks Russia.
