This massive temple sits in the middle of a city. It was used as a major performance hall for the Shriners, a community with 107 years of history. The building was used as a community entertainment facility, from synagogue (a house of worship) on a holy day, to orchestra performances and plays on other days. In 1907, they’ve put $230,000 to build this temple, and was completed in 1931. It was closed down in 2004, but they’re running a restoration project now to see if they can start reusing the building again.
シュライナーズ(Shriners)という団体は、救済、真実というフリーメーソンの原則に基づいて派生した組織。ミステリー界隈でもこれは有名な話。そのシュライナーがかつて使用していた、壮大な寺院廃墟がある。アメリカの某街の中心地。聖なる日にはシナゴーグとして使用され、オーケストラによる演奏会、演劇まで行われていたエンターテイメント溢れるコミュニティ施設だった。
Synagogue on a holy day
1907年に当時並外れた金額23万ドル、日本円で約２億5000万円をかけ建設され1931年に完成した107年の歴史を持つシュライナーズの寺院。財政難と老朽化で閉鎖したのは、2004年。現在、復興プロジェクトが行われ、建物を再利用する動きを見せている。

Arrived at the temple, and my first thought was, “the building this big CAN’T be abandoned… no wait it actually is abandoned…” I found a Shriners’ mark on the side of the building. My heart started pounding as I found out that this building was owned by the Freemasons. The massive cathedral dome and four towers uses unique Moore revival architectural designs. I’ve never walked through an abandoned religious building this size.
WOW, Theatre
Inside was pitch black without any lights, but I just couldn’t stop saying wow! The massive stage once referred as a jewelry theater is built and decorated in Moore revival style. The high ceiling and beautiful skylight will make you feel like a chickpea. The second floor was a ball room. Freemasons may have organized a meeting here sometime!
内部は照明がなく真っ暗。懐中電灯をつけると、かつて宝石劇場と呼ばれていた大ステージが目の前に広がる。豪華なムーア装飾に飾られた客席、高い天井と美しい天窓。自分が豆つぶのように感じてしまうくらい本当に大きな空間だった。「ここで夜な夜な、フリーメイソン談義が行われていたのかも…」私たちこの世界をわかるような気になっているけど、心のどこか奥の方に不思議なものに魅せられたい気持ちが常に潜んでいる気がする。
