Near the slum areas, I introduced before, Mint Bureau building stays on called Sihang warehouse. This concrete-made six-storied building was located on the corner of the northwest of新拉扱橋. A heavy fighting used to be happened between the Japanese Imperial Army and the Chinese army on this area. This warehouse was attacked because was used as a stock piling base. Still many scars of the battle were left on its walls. The gunshot marks were really big; it seemed attacked by trench mortars or grenade launchers… I could not say anything once I faced the walls with scars telling the terribleness of battlefields, and the history of violent.
先日紹介した、上海のスラム街の近くに四行倉庫と呼ばれる造幣局倉庫建物が現れる。コンクリート製6階建てのビルで、新拉扱橋の北西角にある。かつてこのエリアでは日本軍と中国軍の激しい戦闘が行われた場所で、この倉庫の中には食料や医療品、砲弾・弾薬が備蓄されていたので、攻撃の対象となった。今でも倉庫の壁には激しい銃撃戦のあとが残る。銃痕は大きく、迫撃砲・グレネードランチャーの跡だと言われています。戦場のすさまじさを後世に語る壁の迫力に私は息をのんだ。まさに激動の歴史の生き証人。

The defense of Sihang Warehouse took place from October 26 to November 1, 1937, and marked the beginning of the end of the three-month Battle of Shanghai in the opening phase of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Defenders of the warehouse held out against numerous waves of Japanese forces and covered Chinese forces retreating west during the Battle of Shanghai.
