St. Claude Avenue Bascule Bridge

I went to visit St. Claude Avenue Bridge, because I saw some picture on the web, and I was really fascinated by this structure. Is not so big, but he Steampunk style design, and some rusted parts, make this bridge particularly interesting and cool for me! His powerful steel frames, make it looked like as a “tiny giant”, like Daniel Craig’s breast! When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, even when the bridge was swallowed up by a muddy stream, many people took refuge from the flooding atop of the bridge.

橋はお好き？ セント・クロード・アベニュー橋の写真をネットで発見して、これは見に行かないと！というわけで行ってきました。橋は大きくないんだけど、ところどころ錆びてる感じがかっこいい！なんというか力強い鉄骨で作られた姿は”小さな巨人”という感じ。まるでダニエル・クレイグの胸板のような….意味がわからないけど、そんな感じ！そしてこの橋のグッとくる話は、ハリケーンカトリーナがニューオリンズを襲ったとき、橋は濁流にのまれながらも洪水から非難した人々の足場となり多くの人の命を救ったそうです。

History:
The St. Claude Avenue Bridge is a bascule bridge with four vehicular lanes over the Industrial Canal in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was originally a combination railroad and automobile bridge, with two pairs of railroad tracks in the center of the lift span and automobile lanes straddling it. (wikipedia)

セント・クロード·アベニュー跳開橋はルイジアナ州ニューオリンズの産業運河かかる跳開橋です。もともとは鉄道と車両用の橋として使用され、ナイン・ワード地区にアクセスするための大事な橋の一つとなりました。

An interesting point of this bascule bridge, are the concrete blocks that can upward swing in providing the clearance for the boat traffic. It’s like a transformers bridge! But unfortunately it can’t transform into a robot 🙁 If someone will be crushed by this massive concrete blocks, he will become thin as a sheet of paper!

In the east side of the bridge, there is an area with a bad reputation, because is the New Orleans district with the highest reported crime rate, so you must be careful if you want go there. Also the Taxi usually arrive only in the west side of the bridge because the other side is dangerous.

跳開する際の重りに使う、大きなコンクリートブロックは迫力満点。人間が下にいたらペチャンコになってしまいます！デカい！！
ところで、橋の東側は、悪名高いナインス・ワード地区です。ニューオリンズでも屈指の犯罪率を誇るエリアですので、観光の際はご注意を。タクシーの運転手も西側までしか行ってくれませんでした…

There is another old bridge in New Orleans. It is Claiborne Avenue Bridge! Here, also it was a nice rusty bridge!

実は！ニューオリンズにはもう一つ、かっこいい橋があります。それがクレイボーンアベニュー橋です！こちらもすてきなサビ具合の橋なんですが今回は時間がなくてみれませんでした。
