The Penthouse Adriatic Club

白亜のカジノ！The Penthouse Adriatic Club, once called the White Casino Palace during the short-lived Yugoslavian casino boom, is housed in one of the numerous abandoned hotels on the Croatian island of Krk. This bizarre and amazing looking structure is known as the Brutalist style, flourished from 1960s to late 1980s, and had a strong support from European communist countries. Yugoslavia was one of the countries that used this architecture as a form of propaganda during its communist era. The structures built during that timeframe are unique in every way; so overbearing and nihilistic… that’s what I love about their design so much.

白亜のカジノ！かつて白亜のカジノ宮殿と呼ばれたペントハウスアドリアクラブ。クロアチアはアドリア海に浮かぶクルク島にある大型ホテルの廃墟です。共産アーキテクチャ全開のデザインは、東ヨーロッパを代表する廃墟の一つだったりします。Brutalistスタイルというデザインで、当時ユーゴスラビアは、急成長する共産主義国家の象徴として、建築を一種のプロバカンダとして利用。それを”建築プロバカンダ”っていうそうな。そしてSciFi的で野心的な建築を次々に生み出したとのこと。その時に生まれた建築はどれもユニークで斬新なデザインが多いのです。グッドデザイン賞受賞レベルです。共産共産言ってますと、「Tommyさんは共産主義なの？」というコメントは以前もらったんですが、主義どうこうには興味がなく、かつて赤い悪魔と呼ばれた国関係が残したデザインは惹かれてしまうんです。恐ろしくもあるけど、威圧的で虚無的で、唯一無二のデザイン性であるとこに魅力を感じてしまう…そんなお年頃です。

“I don’t see any other cars around… Hey, I’m the first one here!” While thanking whoever built this convenient parking lot, I started searching for the nearby entry point. As soon as I stepped into the area, the vandalized outdoor swimming pool greeted me inside. Now, this is what I call vacation! The protruding ceilings right behind the pool were very staggering… even IMAX would be taken aback by it. I don’t know if it serves any function, but it’s poking out of everywhere and I certainly enjoy the view!

「ご丁寧に駐車場がある…ありがとうございます。」と車を停めて、早速、適当な入り口から中に入ってみました。入ってすぐに、目の前には落書きだらけの屋外プール。そして背後から、ただならぬ雰囲気を感じ見上げると、ドーンとIMAXもびっくりな飛び出る例の屋根とファーストコンタクト! すごく飛び出ている…機能性に意味があるのかわからないけど、とにかくすごく飛び出てる…。これは絶景です！

A little History
This high-end Casino Hotel was designed by Croatian architect Boris Maga, funded by extremely rich Bob Guccione, and opened its lavish doors in the early 1970s when casino was a big hit in Yugoslavia. Even after the bankruptcy and several incidents of illegal actions, the hotel remained open for 20 years. In 1990, civil war started and the number of visitors severely decreased, causing the hotel to close down. There is a rumor circulating that people are trying to restore the place but there hasn’t been much visible movement so far.

1970年代初期、ユーゴスラビアでのカジノブームが巻き起こり、高級カジノホテルとして富裕層に向けてオープン。斬新なデザインは、このホテルを有名にした立役者でもあるクロアチアの建築家ボリスマガス(Boris Magaš)によって設計されたそう。オーナーは超お金持ちのボブ・グッジョーネ(Bob Guccione)氏。その後、破産、違法など問題には直面しましたが20年にわたりホテルは開かれていました。1990年の内戦によって観光客離れが加速し、ホテルは閉鎖に追い込まれました。現在、再開発の噂は出ていますが、進展は今のところないそうです。

共産建築の極み
The “White Casino Palace” got its name from the interior design. The atrium lounge was designed to greet rich gamblers to throw money around back in hay day; huge white columns reach all the way up to the roof, sun beaming from the ceiling, and several round tables are setup in the middle. Moderation was certainly not in their lexicon.

白い宮殿の異名は、内装から由来。ギャンブル好きの富裕層を出迎えるための吹き抜けのグレートラウンジがまさにグレート空間。巨大な白い柱が天井に向かって伸び、天井からはアドリア海の日差し。円形の座席がいくつも並び、レトロなつくり。贅沢の極み。

Exploration Memo : 探索メモ
クルク島は車で行くと便利。内地と島をつなぐ102号線の橋は片道だけ有料。ペントハウスアドリアクラブは海沿いの現役のホテルエリアにあるので、観光客がたまにいる。さらに野良猫の天国。人懐っこいのでネコガイドが無料で付く! エリア周辺は地元の人も散歩しているので、比較的安全に入ることができるけれど、公式に開放されているわけではないので犯罪、建物の崩壊などに注意。クルク島はスカンピ料理がめちゃ美味しい。
