The 13-Level Smelter

This 13-step building sits on a steep hill in Taiwan and is called ″The Shuinandong Smelter (金瓜石十三層廢墟,金瓜石十三層遺址)″. It is called ″The 13th-Level″ by explorers. The Japanese had found veins of gold and copper in this mountain, and this smelter was built in 1933 during the Japanese occupation in Taiwan. The Copper Mine is really huge and the complexity of the architecture is fascinating. However, this magnificent, beautiful place stands on contaminated soil. So most part of the building is off limits and some are simply abandoned.

十三層遺跡(十三層遺址)は、台湾の瑞芳区の金瓜石水南洞にある精錬所の廃墟です。13層の建物を持つことから“13-Level”とも呼ばれています。金瓜石は日本人によって金や銅の鉱脈を発見され、日本占領時の1933年に精錬所が建てられました。現在は閉山され、廃墟になりましたが、山の側面に立つ姿を見るために観光客も多い場所です。しかし、この精錬所は土壌汚染が深刻でほとんどの場所が立ち入り禁止です。

On a lovely, sunny morning. I visited Jinguashi for the solely for urban exploration at the abandoned Shuinandong Smelter. I went here in 2012 but never entered the area because it was unsafe.
When I walked around the Smelter, some stray dogs came with me. They looked like my guardian dogs…or maybe they were security dogs?

この場所は山岳にあるため、天気がいつも悪いんです。なかなか探索に行くことが出来なったんですが、三回目に訪れたときは、快晴でやっと行くことが出来ました。山の側面に立ち、海に向かい合っている製錬所の姿は本当に美しかったです。製錬所のまわりには、炭坑の遺構がたくさん残っていて、見所満載です。
