Wagakawa Hydropower Plant sits hidden on the green side of the mountain, with a beautiful view of the mountain river landscape in Iwate, Japan. This Hydropower Plant was closed due to a construction of a new dam (Yuda Dam) in the 1960s! Nowadays this spectacular building is abandoned and slowly goes to nature.
In addition to the main power plant, The most impressive part of this building is the huge surge tank and pressure conduit ! It seems like the world of Sci-Fi !
Rumor says this place access was very difficult ! There is no easy way but to climb over the mountains, to go through dark underground waterways, or to cross the river…We decided to cross the river. This time, the water level of the river was pretty low. It is very lucky! We were easily able to get close to the power plant. The huge buildings and the size of its site are quite overwhelming. The underground had lots of deep holes required for generating electricity in the hydro power plant. I’m very fond of huge concrete buildings ! There are not so many huge abandoned industrial buildings in Japan, so this place is so valuable for me.
