粋な飛行機格納庫。I’ve been hoping to visit this place for several years and I finally had a chance to do so! The classic old wooden hangers used back in World War II are standing in the still active Tonopah Airport, Nevada. It was about 5 hours from LA by car; not too far but not close enough either…
アメリカ、ネバダ州のトノパー。ナイ郡が公用に利用しているトノパー空港、その敷地内には第二次世界大戦中に使用されていた木製の格納庫（ハンガー）の廃墟が存在します。数年前から、この荒野の格納庫には目をつけ、「次にアメリカに行く機会があれば行こう」と決めていたで、早速行ってきました。ロスからだと車で、ぶっとばして5時間ほどです。近いような遠いような・・・。
A little history:
The three hangars were built back in 1943 and were used for training fighter crews and bombers. The property was deeded to the county in 1949 to be use as a civilian airport. Apparently, one of the hangers is privately owned by some guy, but the remaining two are owned by the airport.
この三つのハンガーは1943年に建設され、第二次世界大戦中にパイロットを訓練するために使用された。1949年にアメリカ政府によって郡の所有に移されました。一つは、とあるおじいさんの個人所有（所有権を主張している）。あとの二つは、空港が所有しています。全ての格納庫は荒廃したまま砂漠に残されています。
Chi-bi airport!
As we made our way to the airport, we spotted the hangars in the distance. Massive wooden buildings sprawling across a large desert was quite a view. Now I know this particular area is abandoned, but their lack of security sort of worried me. “You sure that’s enough security for an airport?” ”No problem. Everything’s fine.” Doesn’t seem fine to me…
空港近くの舗装されていないガタガタな道を車で進んでいくことしばし、遠目に格納庫が見えてきました。荒野に佇む木造の大きな姿に、思わず「でかい！」の一言。それにしても空港の敷地内だというのに無防備すぎる状態。「そんな警備で大丈夫か？」「大丈夫だ、問題ない」…いやあるでしょ。
人間と比べるとこんなかんじ。大きいです！
Big hangars!
Out of the three hangars, the one furthest to the south was without fencing and we were able to take a good look around. Just imagining the hangars back in the day with fighter jets going in and out of the building make me want to jump up and down. I also spotted the classic car abandoned near the building. Abandoned hangars and weathered vehicle in middle of the desert… what an awesome trio… Thank you whoever left this car for this awesome view.
三つの格納庫のうち、一番南に位置する格納庫だけフェンスがなく自由に見てまわることができました。戦争当時、この格納庫の中に戦闘機たちが待機していたと想像すると、こうなにかグッとくる熱さがありますね。格納庫の近くに年代ものの廃車があり、砂漠×廃墟×廃車…なんという最高のトリオ。感謝の気持ちが止まらない。
Tremendous view廃車に上から見る景色
There was no wind at all that day. We stood still in the absolute silence in middle of the desert, taking a moment to etch the image into our minds. It’s pretty amazing to see the wooden structures built 70 plus years back are still standing today.
この日は、風もなく無音の砂漠。しばし、廃車の上でこの光景を目に焼き付ける。何もない砂漠の中で、木製にもかかわらず原型を留めているのはすごい。鎮座する格納庫にただただ圧倒されるばかりでした。

I didn’t know that a desert during winter season could get so dry… The most essential item I should have brought with me was a chapstick.
3つの格納庫のうち、二つはフェンスで囲われているので、中に入ることはできない。冬の砂漠の乾燥は半端ない。一番重要なアイテムはリップクリームだと思い知る。
