The South China Mall, Now, over 99% of the retail space is vacant. There are many flaws to the mall’s location. Why was the shopping mall deserted? There are many flaws to the mall’s location. Access is very inconvenient! The mall is located in the suburbs of Dongguan, where it is only practically accessible by car or bus, rendering it unreachable to a large percentage of the public. As its disappointing result, you can say that is “the most deserted malls in the world”.
The South China Mall once called ‘the largest mall in the world’. It was bigger than ‘Mall of America’. When the South China Mall (later renamed the New South China Mall) opened in Dongguan, Guangdong province in 2005. It is hoped that the mall have over 2,300 stores and was meant to be the largest in the world. There are , seven zones modeled on international cities, mini-amusement park and spaces for hundreds of shops with classic Western-style buildings. However, since its opening, the mall has no more than a few dozen small tenants.

I had the chance to visit the biggest deserted mall in the world. At first glance, it did not look like a ghost shopping mall. There was something gorgeous about the atmosphere of the outside of this classic Western-style mall. Around the entrance there was an artificial river flowing to the shopping street at the center and there was a small amusement park in the courtyard.

When we entered the building, there were very few visitors! The artificial river had run dry and the elevator did not work, plus almost all of the retail space was vacant! So if you go here, you will not hear children playing. The place was really lonely…
I don’t think this mall will ever turn back to the way it was when it opened. It really looks like a shopping mall after the end of the world. If only the mall had zombies here, I would be happy!
The mall has a many security guards for some reason. Rumor says, if you look like a journalist, the guards will make you stop making photos. Strange, I think they don’t want bad publicity for this place.

Strange place Ikumi, that you find there. I wonder that no one of the more poor people use it, but i think the security is the reason. Normaly the chinese people don’t waste any place, if they can use it for sleeping, living or to make their own little shop there. That is my experience when i’ve visited the mainland china in the past. But typical, as every where in the world. is that nearly every thing that isn’t used any more is soon full of rubbish. Pity.
Security is indeed necessary, but why do we look like a journalist, the guards will make you stop making photos? It detailed reason is not known. And, there are a lot of ghost places like this in China. Chinese city have to pay for economic rapid growth.
That would be such a strange place to explore! An almost new, huge mall with no people. Ah, zombies, maybe the cause of the problem? The place did just scream “Dawn of the Dead’ to me the more I looked at it!
Haha “Dawn of the Dead’ China version 🙂 This place is strange! and funny!
wow, thank you for your wonderful photographs, we have nothing like these places in Australia!
Thanks for your comment 🙂 I will go to Australia later this year, I know, Australia has some abandoned places 🙂 They are cool! Australia is one of the amazing country for me.
